Cloth diapers are an economical way to get your little one through to potty training. Disposable diapers are easy, but they get very expensive over the 2, 3, 4 or maybe even 5 years your child will be in need of diapers. Cloth diapers are just as easy.

HOW MANY The first thing to figure out is "how many diapers will I need?". This will depend on how often you child need to be changed and how often you will want to launder your diapers. You will need to multiply how often you want to launder your diapers by the times in a day you generally need to change your child. Of course you will want 5-10 diapers as a reserve. Most new babies need 10-12 changes a day. Older babies only need 6-10 diapers a day, even older toddlers and children will only need 5 or 6 changes each day.

THE EXTRAS Now that you have your supply of diapers you will need some extra supplies. Pins and covers will be needed. They can both be found where diapers are sold. You can use the 'plastic pants' as covers or buy specialty covers sold in stores and online. You will also need a place to store the soiled diapers. Most parents use a diaper pail, but some fill the washer and place all the diapers in the washer and just run the load at the end of each day. There are also inserts called diaper doublers and liners. These are used for children who wet heavily, for overnight use or even to help with the removal of BMs.

DIAPER PAIL There are two types of diaper pails you can use; a wet pail and a dry pail.

A dry pail is just that, a diaper pail that is empty. You can just drop your soiled diapers into the pail. Most parents will dunk diapers with BM in the toilet or the sink before placing in the pail. You can use baking soda to help with odor. The wet method includes a water and vinegar mixture to neutralize the ammonia. You will want to find the mix that is right for you. If you choose to use a wet pail, please keep in mind the drowning hazard. Children can drown in just enough water to cover their nose. Children are also top heavy and can fall into the pail head first very easily.

WASHING You can wash diapers in the same detergent you use for your child's laundry. Use something gentle on your child's skin. Wash in hot and rinse in cold. Do not use liquid fabric softener. It will interfere with the diapers ability to absorb. Do not use bleach.

If you have stains that you want to try and get out, hang your diapers in the sunlight. You can dry cloth diapers in the dryer. Do not use a fabric softener dryer sheet. As with liquid fabric softener, it will lessen the absorbency of the cloth. You will also want to avoid Deft and Ivory Snow for washing the cloth diapers. While these are great for your baby's clothing, they contain fabric softeners.

Everyone knows that throwing a baby shower involves some serious bit of hard work. Ask anyone who has ever planned a shower and you’ll know what I mean. Sleepless nights, headaches, frequent anxiety attacks; nothing is unexpected when it comes to arranging a baby shower.

But really, showers needn’t be about drudgery alone; it can be a lot of fun too. A number of newly emerged trends also try and make the shower-planning both fun and enjoyable. A good way to keep yourself entertained, during the planning phase and the party itself is by making a brand new diaper baby cake.

Don’t worry a diaper cake is not some hideous baked treat devised by some senile family member who has lost her sanity trying to arrange a baby shower, LOL. Far from it, a diaper cake is actually a simple method of presenting a shower gift and great fun.

All mothers know exactly how diapers become a way of life during the first year of parenthood. All mothers (and a few fathers too:) have to deal with more diapers than they would want to remember starting as even before they get their newborn home.

Your diaper cake can equip the new parents with all the essentials that they’ll be needing in the days to come. Your diaper cake readies them for a process of; insomnia, frequent baby screeches, squishy diapers, talcum powder, baby food and so much more. We all know about being parents, right.

Making a diaper cake is really easy, fun and involves little more than getting a few baby things and arranging them in pleasing ways. First off; grab about 5 dozen baby diapers and rubber bands, a couple of ribbons, 2 baby milk bottles (a 4 ounce one and an 8 ounce one) and last but not the least a splendid plastic cake platter.

If you want you can also pick up a few other basics like rattles, lotions, teething rings and even a few soft toys to make your diaper cake truly useful.

Once you have everything you need you will have to arrange your baby things in layers in order to get your diaper cake done. If you have an eye and a hand for crafting; a diaper cake will be as easy as pie. A fine diaper cake will draw so much attention because they can be so beautiful, they’ll almost take your breath away.

Another way to prevent a rash is to smear the clean area with corn starch or lanolin. A rash is also less likely if your child goes without diapers for a half hour each day. Summer sunshine is especially good for the skin.

When you use cloth diapers rinse a dirty one immediately, for no one likes to find one soaking in the toilet. Wring it and put it in a plastic bag with the wet ones. If you wash diapers ever day or two, they need no soaking and neither the job nor the smell will overwhelm you. For a young baby, diapers should go through the washer twice – the second time without soap – as this residue often is too caustic for a baby’s skin and can cause a rash. The rays of the sun and the high heat of the dryer will kill any remaining bacteria.

Expect to diaper your baby for nearly three years, although a two year old should be encouraged to get his own diaper when he needs it and to put the wet one in the hamper for you. This an early step in toilet training.
